How To Do a Road Trip to Kausani ?

Kausani, Uttarakhand
Kausani, Uttarakhand

To reach Kausani, Delhi must be your starting point. No matter where you are, there are numerous options to reach Delhi. After reaching Delhi, you can get there by Road, Train and Air. The most followed is by Road as there is no direct train or flight to Kausani

                               Delhi —- Hapur —- Moradabad — Nainital —  Almora — Kausani

Total Distance: 408 Km  ||  Total Time: 9.5 Hours

You can go by car or hire a taxi, which can easily be rented from Delhi, but it is a bit expensive to get there if you are going solo. In such cases, you can book an overnight Volvo Bus to Nainital or Ranikhet, which run mostly from RK Ashram Marg Metro Station and Kashmere Gate Metro Station. It will cost you around Rs. 600-700, depending on the season for a sleeper berth in an AC Bus. This is a plus point if you don’t want to travel in a seating mode as there are no sleeper berths on the buses that operate to Shimla/Manali. The Volvo Bus will drop you at Kathgodam Station, and thereafter a local bus will take you to Nainital.

After reaching Nainital,  you can book a private taxi to Kausani as there are no direct buses from Delhi. There are a few state-run buses from Nainital, but their frequency is not that good. In season time, sharing taxis is also an option to reach Kausani, saving you some money. However, overall, private taxis remain a preferred choice for most travelers.

Although the distance looks feasible to cover in a single day, I suggest you make an overnight halt at Nainital to rest your body as the route after Haldwani to Nainital is not a straight road but more of a circular type. So it’s not about acute mountain sickness (AMS) as seen in the higher regions such as Ladakh, but getting your body adapted to such routes. It would take around 4 hours (116 Km), including one halt for tea, to reach Kausani from Nainital.

How to Reach Kausani by Train ?

Apart from the Monsoon season (July-September), I would say every month is the best time to stay there. However, the most preferred time by the tourists are summer months March-June. I have also prepared a weather chart for the whole year so you can plan your journey accordingly:

Weather Chart, Rakkar Himachal Pradesh

How to Reach Kausani by Air ?

Yes, it is possible to reach Kausani by air, but it will cost you a bit. The Nearest Airport to Kausani is Pantnagar Airport, which is located at a distance of 168 Km. Flight services to this airport are limited, but you can still find flights from major cities in India. The route from Pantnagar Airport will be like this –

Pantnagar Airport — Haldwani — Bhimtal — Almora —  Kausani

If you are a snow lover, you should visit Kausani in December and January. You will get a decent snowfall. Otherwise, you can see in summer when the weather is quite pleasant, and you can embrace the surroundings. I first visited Kausani in March. It was a bit cold, but you can clearly see the three peaks of the Himalayas. Further, if you are into stargazing or astrophotography, March is the perfect month for clear skies, with the temperature ranging between 9 degrees and 27 degrees.
